Continual Learning Through Scotland’s Agritourism Community

To continuously refine our offering and learn from leaders in rural accessibility, owner Caroline Millar and Manager Victoria Prentice recently attended a meeting of Scotland’s Agritourism Monitor Farm Programme at The Rings in Fife, hosted by Moira Henderson MBE and her family.
 
Set across 90 acres of Fife farmland, The Rings is an award-winning example of fully integrated accessible accommodation, featuring step-free layouts, ceiling hoists, and customizable wet rooms.
 
This Scottish Government-funded initiative allows the sharing of best practices, supporting rural businesses, including farm stays. The meeting brought together farmers and agritourism business owners, as well as representatives from Scottish Enterprise and Fife Council, all focused on advancing accessibility in rural tourism.
 

Rethinking Accessibility: Beyond the Physical

The session offered invaluable insights into how rural tourism businesses can better serve all guests. One of the key takeaways focused on the sheer breadth of access needs:
 
  • Around 25% of people in Scotland have a disability or access need, yet only 4% of that group require the use of a wheelchair.
  • Access needs are diverse, and many are non-visible. Whether a guest is neurodivergent, hard of hearing, managing a chronic condition, or navigating physical mobility challenges, accessibility requires a thoughtful approach.
